The Joy of Summer Entertaining
Summer is the perfect time to open your doors, enjoy the beautiful weather, and invite friends and family over. As I have mentioned before, entertaining is not for everyone. Some people literally get ill at the thought of hosting a party or event. I get it—it’s not for everyone. But if you're one of those people, I hope this article inspires you to step outside your comfort zone and try your hand at entertaining.
One advantage of hosting a summer event is that you can do it outdoors, weather permitting, always have a back-up plan. So, if you're someone who worries about people in your house, spills on your furniture, or whether your home is big enough, hosting outside helps alleviate those concerns. Just remember, you can start small and host only what you can comfortably manage.
Consider a small backyard BBQ, cocktails on the deck with friends and a few simple appetizers, or perhaps a dessert night featuring an ice cream sundae bar. The beauty of dining outdoors is that it's perfectly acceptable to use disposable plates, napkins, and utensils, making cleanup quick and easy.
So, if you've been thinking about hosting a gathering at your home—or even if you live in an apartment or condo—there's no time like the present. Step outside your comfort zone and make the first move. Create an action plan using the simple "Who, What, Where" approach. Plan your menu, start small, and don't put too much pressure on yourself. Most importantly, remember that you should enjoy the experience just as much as your guests.
If you decide to take the plunge and host a gathering, please report back and let us know how it goes.
Happy Entertaining!

Another great benefit of summer entertaining is taking advantage of the bountiful harvest of fresh fruits and vegetables that make wonderful additions to any gathering. It's the perfect excuse to visit your local farmers market, stock up on seasonal produce, and support local farmers in your community.
From everyone's favorite sweet corn on the cob, perfect for any BBQ, to squash and zucchini cooked on the grill, summer vegetables are both delicious and easy to prepare. Fresh tomatoes are ideal for salads or enjoyed on their own. Cucumbers paired with your favorite hummus make a simple and refreshing appetizer. It doesn't get much easier than that.
Let's not forget the amazing fruits that make their debut during the summer months, offering easy and refreshing options for entertaining. There is nothing better than fresh strawberry shortcake on a hot summer day—or take it up a notch with an assorted berry shortcake. Melons are always a welcome addition to any gathering. Cold watermelon is refreshing on its own, while cantaloupe topped with a scoop of ice cream and sprinkled with fresh chopped mint is sure to impress your guests. Summer fruits also make a wonderful addition to beverages, whether for adults or children.
